STEM CELL FOR TREATING INFERTILITY

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that are present in the embryonic, fetal, and adult stages of life and give rise to differentiated cells that compose the building blocks of tissue and organs. Due to their unlimited supply and high differentiation potential, stem cells are considered as potentially new therapeutic agents for the treatment of infertility. Stem cells might be stirred in vitro to develop numerous numbers of specialized cells together with male and female gametes suggesting their potential use in procreative drugs. During past few years a substantial progress within the derivation of male germ cells from pluripotent stem cells has been made. In addition, stem cell-based ways for female internal reproductive organ regeneration and gametocyte production are planned as future clinical therapies for treating infertility in ladies.

For couples and clinicians like First step IVF fertility clinic in West Delhi, a diagnosis of infertility signals the start of investigations and possible treatment. As infertility is a heterogeneous condition, defined by Dr Priti Gupta of First Step IVF fertility clinic in West Delhi, is a failure to conceive a clinically detectable pregnancy after >12 months of unprotected intercourse. Due to their unlimited supply and high differentiation potential, stem cells are considered as potentially new therapeutic agents for the treatment of infertility.

Stem cells also can be derived from extraembryonic tissues (amnion, chorion, placenta, and umbilical cord). Amnion and chorion contain stromal cells that display characteristics and differentiation potential similar to bone marrow-derived MSCs and are able to differentiate into adipocytes, endothelial cells, hepatocytes, osteocytes, myocytes, and neurons. Placental-derived stem cells have the capability to differentiate into ectodermic, mesodermic, and endodermic cell types, while umbilical cord matrix stem cells, after transplantation, enhanced muscle regeneration in mouse model. Dr Priti Gupta of First Step IVF fertility clinic in West Delhi says, “the main advantage of stem cells derived from extraembryonic tissues is the efficient isolation from tissues normally discarded at birth avoiding moral considerations that plague the isolation of human embryonic stem cells”.
